So, let me start this off with stating that I am not normally one of those new age guys, with a man bun and skinny jeans. I am just a normal southwest Florida native who likes the outdoors and being in the woods. So, when I sit down to write a review of something that people see as being “hippy”, I must really see a reason to tell y’all about it.
Signs of Sensory Issues
A little back story, our six-year-old daughter would drive me nuts with the pile of clothes she would leave on the floor every day when she would get dressed. I mean I would lose my mind with the 6 shirts, 4 pairs of shorts and some how 37 socks she would go through while getting dressed. Well I did what every American does, I went to Google, and came to realize there was a whole world of sensory issues that are being learned about. Now I am not going to get into the details of these issues, as am I not a Doctor, just a semi-educated first responder. But, as I kept researching I noticed one of the many issues kids with sensory issues have is poor sleep habits and guess what so did our daughter. I mean so bad that it was almost a guarantee that she would end up in our room every night, then I would start the whole process of getting her back to bed, costing me many hours of some much-needed beauty sleep. And the nights she would not come into our room, she would be found with every toy in her room on top of her and yes it was a lot.
Finding a Solution
So, after some more research by my “hippy” wife, yes, she is one of those new age women who loves her essential oils and probiotics fix everything, she read about weighted blankets and the potential benefits that they might have for our daughter and my sleep pattern. I again did what every American does when they are looking for something I opened the Amazon app on my phone and searched “weighted blanket”.
Well as you can imagine I was greeted by a plethora, man that was a big word, of weighted blankets. They ranged in size, color, weights, and price. After that seemed like hours of searching, but it probably was about 15 minutes, I settled on the ZonLi small weighted blanket. It fit the needs of what we were looking for, weighting only 7 pounds, cheap (under a hundred buck), and Pink. Boom slide right for the one click order and it’s on the way, and being an Amazon Prime item it was at our door in two days.
Like almost all of us do when we see that Amazon box by the front door, we rip into it like a kid on Christmas morning. First thing I noticed was it felt a lot heavier than the listed 7 pounds when it was neatly folded up, so I placed it on the scale. To my surprise it was 7.0 pounds, so that was a plus because there was an attention to detail to get the weight right on the nose. Now that I know I didn’t end up with a blanket that would smother my daughter I opened it up to check this thing out.
First thing I noticed was how soft it was, honestly it is softer than our comforter that we use every day. Which was another huge plus, because I have learned that the softness of the fabrics is a huge deal when dealing with sensory issues. The fabric feels like a very soft cotton and is not itchy at all. The blanket is made with small squares that contain some sort of small bead that make up the weight. I can not tell you what the beads are made of because, well I don’t want to ruin a brand-new blanket to find out. But they are very small and spread out evenly when the blanket is laid flat spreading the weight out over the entire area of the blanket providing and even pressure for our daughter when she sleeps. I examined the over all construction of the blanket and all the stitching seems very good and looks like it will hold up over time and the abuse that a kid’s blanket will be put through. I mean who does not love a good blanket fort in the middle of the day. And for the parents it can be washed in the washing machine on the gentle cycle, and for the kids it only gets softer after it washed.
So the big question you might be having by now it did it work? And I am happy to inform you that not only did it work, it has been a game changer in the sleep pattern of our daughter. While it did take her some getting used to for the first few nights, but after a few nights she was asking for it over her normal comforter that she had used before. Our daughter falls sleep faster and sleeps better ever since we started using the ZonLi weighted blanket. Now our daughter can not really explain how she feels when using the blanket, she just knows that she wants it every night and gets a good night rest.
However, what ended up having is my wife has resorted to stealing the blanket during the day while our daughter is at school. Understand that we both are first responders and work a 24 hour shifts, and naps are needed most days when we get home from work. So one day when I found her in bed napping with our daughters blanket I asked her how it felt. Her exact words were “a sense of calm over my restless legs” and “ I don’t feel the need to jerk or move around”. She loves it so much that she has been looking for one for our bedroom. Her only complaint was that her toes get hot, but just her toes nothing else. Now our daughter has not voiced it being hot at all and her room does not get that cool like the rest of the house. They have a wide selection of colors and sizes. Sizes range from 5 pounds up to 25 pounds and as you can imagine the more weight the bigger the actual blanket. Most of the blankets are two colors, with the one we got being pink and purple. Also, ZonLi does offer a Duvet type cover to go along with their blankets, while we did not get one that is an option if would like that more traditional look.
Overall ZonLi Weighted Blanket Review
My take on the ZonLi weighted blanket is this, it worked very well for us. Our daughter is sleeping better, which means I am sleeping better. After two months of everyday use it is holding up very well and is getting more comfortable with every washing. Will it work for everyone, I don’t know since again as I stated I am not a doctor and my research into sensory issues is strictly Google driven. But if you are like us and like you sleep and your child is not helping it might be worth a try. If you or your child has sensory issues, which are affecting getting a good night sleep I would highly recommend the ZonLi brand of weighted blankets.
